Along, Belo Monte!
The project of Belo Monte has been questioned by several sectors of our society. While some claim that the plant would provide a breakthrough to the population, others fight for immediate waiver of the work. Despite the environmental impact, we believe in the predominance of the goods that this accomplishment would bring to Brazil.
The decision is based on the expansion of hydro-electric power in the national energy matrix, which was reinforced by the commitment made by Brazil, in 2009, to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide gas, between 36.1% and 38.9% by 2020. The Belo Monte Dam would help maintain the current position of Brazil as one of the cleanest energy matrixes of all developed countries, with up to 46% of energy from renewable sources. This plant would occupy an area of 516 square kilometers, that is considered small, compared to other dams in the world. This is due to the fact that Belo Monte project would have a trickle system, and therefore would cover a smaller area than usual.
Brazil is in full economic development, requiring, increasingly, powerful sources that overcome all energy deficits identified by the country. The production of energy by the Belo Monte plant, would attend these needs, reaching all layers of the population. Thus, bringing an attempt hopefully effective in reducing social inequality, and also of forgetful communities that are localized far away from urban centers.
Besides this project provides a new source of energy, that supports the economic and demographic growth of the country, Belo Monte would also improve the living conditions of local communities, like creating jobs and better quality assistance. The contribution to the region itself also will be present, through their social and environmental programs, since the project of construction of the plant is in line with the national commitment to ensure the rational use of natural resources, environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Some people argue that Brazil already has the production of energy powerful enough to keep the country active for a long time, but we cannot forget that the agreement between Brazil and Paraguay, which manages all energy produced by Itaipu, our biggest energy provider, since 1979, will end, in, relatively, few years, and may leave our country unaided in case there is no such replacement that meets the demands of the country.
Another question discussed about this theme refers to the rate of deforestation that it may cause, however, if we observe that the major blame for the devastation of our country, is summed up, basically, in the burning of forests, illegal logging and wildlife trade, we can infer that the plant is being used as an excuse for some very serious flaws in the Brazilian legislation.
In addition to bringing attention to Brazil in the international market, the Belo Monte's factory would ensure the territorial rights of our country, due to that, there are foreigners who insist on taking advantage of Brazil's land, and, the Amazon forest, is the main victim of exploitation. Despite laws, these same foreigners do not pay the legal taxes for the extraction of natural resources in Brazil, and they did not even have any official agreement with the government. The construction of the plant would serve as a protective barrier for the Brazilian territory, as against the old exploitation practiced by the developed countries than ours.
A point, also emphasized by opponents of the plant's construction, is the large budget that Brazil would spend to build it, but, in view of the tax collection that Brazil has (one of the largest in the world), the country can provide for their residents the priority conditions of a population, such as education, health, housing, among others, and also the construction of Belo Monte Dam. This fact is not accomplished due to the absurd corruption practiced by our public servants, which, unfortunately, happens regardless of any situation that the country is located, or any work it does. Again, the hydro-electric power station is being used as an excuse to cover up the dishonesty of our leaders.
Thus, after we had made a detailed analysis of the pros and cons of the construction of Belo Monte Plant, we came up to the conclusion that it would offer a real chance for the country to go out of the situation in which it is, unfortunately, since it’s existence.
